John William Coltrane is an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working with bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and be at the forefront of free jazz music. He has conducted at least 50 recording sessions and appeared on albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. During his career, Coltrane's music took on a spiritual dimension. He remains one of the most influential saxophonists in the history of music. He has received numerous diaspora awards, including the 2007 Pulitzer Prize, and was canonized by the African Orthodox Church. His second wife was the pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane. The couple have three children: John Jr., bassist; Ravi, a saxophonist; and Oran, also saxophonist.
