Rui Alberto de Figueiredo Soares is a Portuguese politician who has served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2015. He was born in 1956 in Lisbon, Portugal. Soares studied law at the University of Lisbon and graduated in 1979. He then went on to pursue a master's degree in international relations at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Soares began his political career in the 1980s, when he was elected to the Portuguese Parliament in 1985. He served as a member of the Portuguese Parliament until 1995. During this time, he was also a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1995. In 1995, Soares was appointed as the Portuguese Ambassador to the United Nations. He served in this role until 2002, when he was appointed as the Portuguese Ambassador to the United States. He served in this role until 2005. In 2005, Soares was appointed as the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs. He served in this role until 2011, when he was appointed as the Portuguese Minister of Defense. He served in this role until 2015, when he was appointed as the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs once again. Soares is married and has two children. He is 64 years old.
