Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar is a Cuban military officer and politician who served as President-elect of Cuba from 1940 to 1944 and a US-backed military dictator from 1952 to 1959 before overthrown during the Cuban Revolution. Batista first took power as part of The Sergeants Rebellion in 1933, to overthrow the provisional government of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada. He later appointed himself the head of the armed forces, with the rank of colonel, and effectively controlled the five "five-star" members acting as the collective head of state. He maintained that control through a series of puppet presidents until 1940, when he himself was elected president on a populist basis. Then he promulgated the 1940 Constitution of Cuba and served until 1944. After his term ended, Batista moved to Florida, returning to Cuba to run for president in 1952
